Reach Records and the 116 Clique always seem to be putting in work. They’ve put out a handful of solo releases and two versions of their 116 Clique Compilation album within the past year. Now the crew is back at it again with a new 116 Clique album, this time bringing in their 1-1-Six family from all across the United States. The purpose this time around is to give the listener and overview of the writings of the Apostle Paul that are found in the Bible with an album appropriately titled 13 Letters. You see, we have 13 Letters written by Paul in the New Testament, thus the albums name, as each book is summarized in the form of a hip-hop song.

When I first got my hands on this album, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I knew for a fact that I was going to be listening to some quality hip-hop music, but other than that I didn’t know what I was going to be hit with. Was the project going to be really deep and meaty? Was it going to be all dirty south and Midwest style? Who were the emcees and producers putting in work? Lots of questions, but they are all easy enough to answer. The answer to the first I’ll save for later. In terms of the style of the album, it’s a pretty diverse project; you’ve got crunk Midwest beats, east coast bangers, bouncy tracks that get you moving, and even some of those laid back R&P type beats that are great for worship. Emcees who appear on the album would include: Lecrae, Tedashii, Trip Lee, shai linne, 1-Lyfe, Sho, Dillon Chase, Flame, and Json; while producers include: Tony Stone, Numinus, and NAB.

So let’s talk about the music. As I already stated, each of the tracks on the album (13 in all) deal with one of Paul’s letters and serves as a lyrical summary of the content that is contained within the writing. On the surface, this sounds like it would make for a rather dry album, but the 116 Clique did a wonderful job of bringing the same kind of creativity that they always have in order to deliver their message. An example of this would include Lecrae’s “Break It Down,” where he speaks of the Corinthian church as a single person who is having all kinds of different issues, and later reveals that “Cory” isn’t just a person, but a group of believers who were doing these things. Another unforgettable track is Sho’s “Justified” (Galatians), which is a very bouncy track that speaks about being justified in Christ while hitting you with a very catchy hook that keeps you chanting “bear some fruit!” Even shai linne’s east coast laden “Gospel Music” is nice as you’ll never hear a clearer breakdown of the book of Romans, and that makes you want to keep the track on repeat. One of the pluses for this album is the number of emcees that appear on this project; each brings a unique style of rhyming, which lends itself well to this kind of project. Even for those emcees who appear on multiple tracks, they do a great job of making sure to use drastically different styles on their songs.

Not to be forgotten in all of this are the 5 bonus tracks that are included on the project. The album starts off with two of them: “Begin With the End” and “Dig In.” Both of these tracks serve as an introduction to the purpose of why they’re doing this album and then beckoning you to get your Bible, and other study tools ready so that you can “Dig In” to the texts and study the Word of God. The other three tracks are at the end of the album and include: “Get Loose,” “Evolution,” and “Carry Mine.” “Get Loose” is a bouncy crunk track featuring Trip Lee and Lecrae as they tell the listener to “Get Loose” and worship the Lord; while, “Carry Mine” is a hardcore crunk track by Tedashii that echoes the theme of carrying your cross daily for the Lord. Then Sho hits you with “Evolution” as he speaks of maturing in the faith. These bonus tracks are definitely hot and work well with their position in the album. The first two set the tone for the rest of the album, and the last three leave on a high note with you being encouraged and ready to put in work for the Lord.

Overall, I must say that this is a very courageous undertaking, and the 116 Clique did a superb job in putting 13 Letters together for us, the listener. I didn’t think that this album would be as hot as it was, considering the meaty subject matter, but they proved me wrong and showed that all things can be done in excellence for the Lord, and that nothing less is acceptable. From top to bottom, including the rhyming and production, this album is a smash hit and one that every single Christian should have in their collections. Hands down, this is probably one of the albums of the year, if not number one on the list.

This album is a true blessing to the body of Christ and new believers. It gives and overview of Pauls letters and it does a awesome job of doing these books. 116 clique impressed me they are good artist but the meat they need to share was tough but the holy spirit accomplished it's job in these brothers. I'm looking foward to those brother tackling the 1st four books of the gospel. The best christian album of 2007

You got to love this group. Lecrae and Trip Lee can hold their own with some of the best rappers period when it comes to their delivery. That's why there are so good. Christian rappers should have a great message and it seems to me that everyone of the 116 clique has lyrics, but Lecrae and Trip Lee stand above the rest in their delivery. The whole album is good, and I love the fact they can bring out a wide range of sounds. There first album was very focused on the dirty south, but this one had a little everything. This is a must have in everyone's collection of music.

I just got my hand this album and "my oh my" God knew just what I needed this is the BEST album I have and am not just saying this but the words are powerful I feel more amped to pick my Bible up and indulge and that is the only purpose of music... to glorify our father so I really love this cd it ministers to me like no other...there's not one song on here that I don't like but my favorite is "Keep the Faith"
If you didn't believe before.....

You will now! This is by far one of the best Gospel Music albums that I have ever heard....Period! If you love Rap, love Gospel, and love Jesus Christ then this is a must have album for any Christian..or music lover as far as I'm concerned. The teaching is so on point, the artist that appeared on this 116 project stepped up to the plate and hit a home run. The stand out track is someone i hardly knew of until i purchased this CD...DILLON CHASE. This dude brings it in a major way on the track "Take it Back"(Christ forgives homey that's what it is). All I'm saying is hat's of to Reach Records and the way that God used them. Rapzilla, bump this one up to 5stars and 10pts.
Sweet !!!!

I was blessed with an opportunity to serve God in the capacity of Children's Church Director at my local church. Preparing for the children's annual day in 2007 when I found this CD. My Pastor was so encouraged by the enthusiam the children showed during their annual day, I now have been blessed with another opportunity to lead our in this years Youth Annual Day program...and as the kids say, I am CRUNK!

As always I'm moved by the pure hip hop put out by these guys. I agree with some of the comments above; the delivery and rhymes could be better on some songs. And the southern tracks didn't have the same power they usually do. Otherwise I am a fan and love some of the other tracks. Trip Lee is really breaking out to me, Sound and To Live is Christ are among my favorite tracks.

My City is good and the beat moves me but something to me has always been different about Flame's flow and it bugs me. Still much love to the smoothness of the track and the background hooks "my city, my city, my city..." tight =]

I was surprised how much I liked the bouncy "Justified" and combine that with the lyrics and it's up there on my favorites.

Overall this album gets an 8.5 out of me for being more geared towards my east coast flava, getting away from their west and south influences, and for overall delivery. But how could you hate on men puttin forth the gospel in a tough market? I can't. 10 for concept and lyrics.
great

It's a 9... and it stands :P
written by Trailblazin' Ministries, July 13, 2007
Why did i give it a 9? Just because you're rapping about the Bible doesn't make the rhymes infallible or perfect. There were a few spots on the record where the rhyme schemes and delivery could have been better. It was for "that" reason that I gave Lyrics a 9...

That's why Rapzilla has another section for the Message (the content of the album), which you see I gave a perfect 10.

Good question trumpet of zion. I dont understand how you can give the lyricall section a 9 either! Whats better then the Bible lyrically?? That makes no sense...rapping the Bible takes talent, understanding, time. Not saying that anything else doesn't, I just don't understand how you can break down the Best piece of literature in human history with rhymes like that - and have a 9. My $.02
hmm
