“I still haven’t found / what I’m looking for…”

U2’s Bono nailed the sentiment. In over 20 years of listening to holy hip hop (First purchase: 1986 / Stephen Wiley’s “Bible Break” single – on tape!), I have yet to run across The Perfect Christian Rap Album.

No, that’s not the title of the latest mixtape from an ego-driven new convert you’ve never heard of, but rather the ideal, epitome of what a gospel rap project should be.

Is it even attainable? Could such a thing even exit? Or is it a modern day fairy tale – a unicorn or leprechaun for the urban cross bearers?

To answer that, we would first have to define it.

After much thought and over two decades of listenership (I told y’all I’ve been down for a minute!) I can at least propose what I believe to be the recipe for TPCRA.

Read, respond, and debate. Let the flame wars begin!

Image

Message

The first ingredient is obviously the Message. Given that this music’s primary purpose is ministry, it’s got to have significant content. The lyrics and concepts need to reflect, represent, and interpret the ancient Scriptures we call the Living Word.

This doesn’t mean the songs have to literally follow the plot line of the Bible, mention Jesus every other line, or contain awkward rhyming dictionary attempts to find a match for Habakkuk or Zephaniah.

But, listeners should be able to discern an obvious difference between this album’s content and that of say… 50 Cent, Talib Kweli, or Dem Fanchize Boyz.

Mastery

In order to even get close to the title of The Perfect Christian Rap Album you also have to have talent. Master your craft. This means hot beats, tight lyrics, powerful production, and overall quality. It needs to be the total package.

It doesn’t matter what flavor of hip hop you’re repping – East Coast, underground, Southern Fried, gangsta, or all of the above. Just do it well. The familiar refrain in HHH is that if we’re representing our Savior, our Christ, our Lord – it needs to be done in excellence.

Don’t let poor quality be the reason your message doesn’t reach those who need to hear it most.

Marketability

Finally, you have to have a marketable product. If nobody wants what you are selling then your message music isn’t going anywhere.

Believe me, I’ve heard all the excuses.

  • “They just don’t get my art.”

  • “I’m so far ahead of the game they just ain’t caught up to me yet.”

  • “My style is all my own.”

  • “I won’t sell out.”

But let’s be real – if you aren’t drawing crowds or listeners then you’re not drawing their hearts to encounter the Christ.

To have The Perfect Christian Rap Album you need to have catchy, easy to remember hooks. You need to have content that is convicting but not overly preachy. You have to use beats and concepts that the appeal to your audience. That’s who you are doing this for isn’t it? The listeners?

If you want to keep it a worship offering between you and God and both of you are happy with the end result that’s cool. Just don’t be discouraged if and when you try to expand your audience and get your music into hands other than the ones attached to your own two arms.

That might mean you have to make a song for the soccer moms (who hold the pocket books) or for the junior high youth group. You might have to make a hip pop track that will get you better radio airplay or break down that complex, metaphor in your chorus to something a little more palatable. If you truly have a higher purpose, these sort of compromises shouldn’t matter.

The Verdict

So, is it possible for all three of these elements to actually come together in one project? Perhaps. The closest we’ve had so far have probably been in releases from artists like The Cross Movement or KJ-52.

The Perfect Christian Rap Album may be currently sitting on a bookstore shelf, on a DJ’s turntable, or in your creative little brain. Then again, we may never see the mythical PCRA.

But at least it’s a goal we can strive for.

First off if God is given the Glory throughout the music its perfect in his eye's..Would anyone disagree..but there is No such thing as a perfect Christian Album is there a such thing as a perfect Secular Album ?..there are such things as Good music any musician or music listener can agree that the music they listen to sounds Good but it may not be perfect to them because its not there style of music..so in reality there will never be a perfect album that EVERYONE in the world would all like..cuz what is perfect to You may not be perfect to me..different opinion of music, and flavors of sound

Try this one Out
written by Found One, April 05, 2008
I was thinking the same thing. I have been listening to CRA, but it seemed like there was always and album that was missing something. But i really think that FLAMEs new album, Our World Redeemed. It has the hot beats and easy hooks that a lot of the hiphop today has, but is still a slight bit more distinguishable than mainstream.

I am desperately looking for a copy of Stephen Wiley's Bible Break from around 1985. I wish as a child I had been smart enough to keep the music I had for when I got older. Can anyone help me find this?

The Best Christian Rap album( and its Free)
written by Lamar Gibbs, February 07, 2008
Conviction- Soul Food

The lyrics gets you to the point of knowing Christ is in it, but people can understand it. Its very marketable( talk about free!!!), and the production is top notch, from his state( Michigan). I don't think it can be topped, especially since its the best free album I've ever heard.

It's Gettin There!
written by Refugee, January 09, 2008
Da problem is fam, is that when BANGIN projects come out, GREAT MESSAGE, GREAT LYRICS, CATCHY HOOKS, SLAPPIN BEATS, the artist is still stuck local. No marketability? Maybe, but how? What does it really take to be marketable. BEING NOT CHRISTIAN! I live on the West Coast, and we got a movement goin on called GHETTO GOSPEL! The most anointed cats, Minister RMB, Qheem The Redeem, Sevin, BANGIN ARTISTS, and yet no marketability. It's the cross we have to bear.

Hearing is believing
written by Auntie from Illinois, January 04, 2008
Being a baby boomer, I can only say you have to hear it to believe it. Not sure rap music lyrics are heard. They speak soooo fast, but then again, the younger folks do everything fast these days and the younger folks hopefully are hearing correctly the Word. I think it would be great if a perfect Christian Rap Album is out there and if it is, millions could be sold and millions of souls could be saved. Imagine the impact that album could make.

nice
written by NuLife, December 28, 2007
I feel you man, I wonder if you consider "classic" to be perfect or is that two different classifications. To me classic is an album that you can always put in the CD and remember why you loved it so much

That's what's up
written by E. White, December 25, 2007
Praise God for this article! I haven't been listening for Gospel Rap for as long as you have (8 years), but I've been thinking the same thing. I think Tedashii COULD be the artist that puts it all together though. The question is will there be enough push behind the project to make a real impact.

I found 4
written by HHH 1 love, December 23, 2007
I found the perfect four

1. Todd Bangz - It's not a Game
2. Viktory - Believe it Now
3. Jovan Mackenzy - JIHAD
4. Knine - Underdogg

Some may disagee with my choices but if you knew that over 50 souls have been won with them then you may give them a chance.

Bushwick
written by Sketch the Journalist, December 22, 2007
Perhaps Tre, from what I've heard of Bushwick's album so far I know it has the Message and we know he has a Mastery of the craft. It'll be the Marketability that is a bit of a challenge. He may be too street or too old school for some. We'll see.

And yeah Ras, I would make the same comment about BB Jay. The Biggie bite definitely hurt the project.

The Little Big Man
written by Tre9, December 22, 2007
The little big man Bushwick Bill might have what you are looking for in the three M's, but knowing you, I don't think so. I do think BB Jay's Universal Concussion was strong Ras, but the whole sounding like Biggie thing would slightly offset it from being perfect. Lacrae gives it a close running, but not quite perfect in my eyes. I am waiting on Jesus's release, "The Second Coming". That one will be perfect.

Someday.... Possibly in 2008...
written by Praiz', December 21, 2007
I'm so glad I read this article. I thought I was the only who felt this way. It will happen soon. What I have learned is that most Christian rappers are new to the art. They may have played around with rap or grew up listening to it but they have no previous training or experience. Most have never written a song in their life but suddenly seek out to complete a 25 song cd. Which ends up being recycled Neptunes, Dre or Timbaland beats and redundant chants. Or worse, a knock off gospel Jay Z, Biggie or Pac. Almost all Christian Emcee's thinks that just because it's "gospel rap" or "christian hip hop" that it going to move units. "20 years" later that's still not true. I do believe GOD is will send someone with the perfect christian rap album soon. Possibly in 2008.

GOD Bless, Praiz'

Listen to Sketch!
written by Soccer_mom, December 21, 2007
As one of the fore mentioned "Soccer Moms" I totally agree with Sketch. My teenage daughter loves Rap, but if I can't easily discern what is being preached - and if I don't like the sound, you aren't getting any play in my SUV on the way to practice! Kids have enough going on in their life without having to bear all of your baggage as well. Preach hope, love, forgiveness, respect, and you will be the gift I buy for every balloon cluttered teenage birthday party and for my own child.

It's Possible
written by Ras, December 21, 2007
This would had to be an act of God. The trend in Rap music changes so much that the marketability ring is tricky. Yet in my opinion, B.B. Jay's Jive release was the closest (despite what the soundscan say).
