Manafest is back with a new cd entitled "Citizens Activ", a disc that presents his most commercial effort thus far. Citizens Activ has a plethora of musical styles ranging from pop, rock, and rap. I would think that this will be as successful as his critically acclaimed "Glory" disc, commercially. But after listening to it, I can't really find myself attracted to this new manifestation of Manafest's manifesto.

Now hear me out, Manafest is a talented artist, with great lyrics, flow, and artistry. I dig the dudes presence on his records and his ability to engage the listener, even on sub par tracks. And maybe it's just me, but I think the cd produces too much variety for the average hip hop listener. This is hip hop, right? Ok, that's what I thought... but the musical approach on "Citizens Activ" is just too pop.

Now this may be appealing to the average summer youth festival attendee (especially tracks like Break Up, Steppin' Out, and the Justin Timberland' influenced 4321), but I found myself lacking an attachment to much of the cd. There are a few stand out tracks that catch the attention of my eardrums (Free, Kick It, and So Beautiful) and those are heavily rock influenced. But nothing gives me a chill down my spine (but, sad to say, a lot of music is that way these days).

Check out Manafest's "Citizens Activ" if you're a fan. But if you are new to Manafest, I would encourage starting with an earlier release like "My Own Thing" and “Epiphany” before you venture off into his latest effort.

In my top ten picks of this year
written by Alta Ego, October 12, 2008
I know the year's not over yet but I just know this album is going to be in my final top ten. It's awesome and this is coming from a true hip hop fan. I think hip hop NEEDS this kind of variety.

I've seen better reviews from WordLife. The major drawback in this review is that he didn't even address any of the album's lyrical content. He based his review solely on the music anthems and production, which is fine if he were critiquing an album by Souljah Boy, Snoop Dogg, or 50 Cent. Manafest is a Christian rapper, so I feel his standards should not be measured on musical arrangements alone. In the statement about having too much variety, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Tobymac produce a bunch of variety on Welcome to Diverse City and it still was a big hit among the hip-hop crowd? Anyways, God bless and keep flowing with the Gospel.

Dude, I've been waiting for this album for some time now, and I must say...it was worth the wait. It's awesome. It's not quite so much rappy or hip hopy as some of his other albums but I love it. Espiecally the tracks Lean On Me, Free, and Live On. Lean On Me is his arguably his best song yet...in my opinion.

Oh yeah, my opinion. I LOVE this album, I could listen to this thing all day (and have before, haha). He's actually a bit more Hip-Hop on this then his last one, but I could see where dedicated rap fans may not be all that thrilled about this album. For me it's a nice change, something a little different. Plus I always think it's cool to hear Hip-Hop with real instruments.

" quick question, does someone curse in the track "steppin out"? i was listening to the itunes track and i heard someone say "yo... check this [ish] out here.."

I'm pretty sure he said "shirt" and he went on talking about other clothing after that. A couple lines later he says "and the shoes, gota wear the shoes."

Manafest's cd may not be "hip hop" but it is a cd filled by variety that can fit any mood if your ot in the mood for concentrated rap.

I just want to make sure I'm not bugging, and wondering if we've lowered the standard as far as Christ centered music is concerned..
