SXSW Video Interview: Strange Music’s Murs has strong opinions about the Christian rapper title

Murs, a California-based rapper signed to Tech N9ne’s record label Strange Music, not only probably knows more about Christian hip hop than you do, but he likely also has a stronger stance on the Christian rapper label debate.

“Come out of the closet,” he said. “All you’re going to be doing is glorifying your God and making a boatload of money. What’s the problem? I don’t get it when these guys say, ‘I’m not a Christian rapper.’ Yes you are!”

Murs told Rapzilla.com at SXSW 2015 that he isn’t a Christian, but he grew up a fan of Christian hip hop. He named numerous pioneers of the subgenre over the course of the interview — Michael Peace, Gospel Gangstaz, I.D.O.L. King, S.F.C., 12th Tribe and Sup the Chemist. Murs asserted that only hip-hop listeners who are ignorant to these names would think Christian rap used to be wack.

“I feel like I know more about old school Christian rap than so many, and that’s why they think Christian rap was wack,” Murs said,” because they think DC Talk was the only Christian rap.”
