JayEss Talks About the Differences Between Christian Hip-Hop in the UK & U.S.

UK rapper JayEss spoke to Rapzilla about his new project and how Christian rap is viewed there as opposed to the U.S.

The emcee says his new project Sevin contains more thought sonically and is hoping to appeal to a wider audience.

On his first project, he was a lot more preachy and now is more practical about his delivery of the gospel.

Thematically the songs represent where he is in his life. It’s not necessarily a concept, but more of a theme that runs through.

JayEss tries to create music that references some tougher topics in faith. “I don’t shy away from it.”

He also would agree that people are sleeping on rap from the UK, but they are growing steadily.

“There’s a larger community in the U.S. that will gravitate to Christian hip-hop than in the UK,” he said. “I think the way we deliver our message, the UK public from what I seen, on a small scale, the UK public has gravitated toward it.”

He also spoke about how he takes scriptures and blends them into his hip-hop. “The ministry side is reaching the people, the artistry side is painting the picture.”

JayEss believes Christian hip-hop is in a good state because it keeps growing. People always talk about the old days in secular hip-hop, and he believes one day Christian hip-hop will look back fondly in the same way.
