Json on the sound of ‘Foreign’, what’s next for Lamp Mode

Json’s last two projects, Foreign, Vol. 1 and No Filter, sound significantly different, and he explained the change in an interview with Rapzilla at Legacy Conference 2016.

The St. Louis native said the change was influenced by his move from Iowa back to his hometown.

“My energy was feeling different than what it was. Mind you, the last three albums I’ve made have been in Iowa, so that’s a whole nother energy,” Json laughed.

St. Louis-based producers Deeonthetrack and D-Hood handled the production on Foreign, Vol. 1.

“We were like, ‘Let’s just create a sound that feels like what we’re seeing and what we’re feeling in the city, what we’re seeing and what we’re feeling on the radio,'” Json said.

The Lamp Mode emcee and CEO said the Foreign series will continue to carry that sound, but his next album will sound more musical like No Filter.

In the interview, Json also previewed the future of Lamp Mode.

He said he’s planning to sign as many as four new artists to the record label. And other artists on the label — Shai Linne, Hazakim, S.O. and Timothy Brindle — are working on new music. Brindle is also writing his first book.

Json also revealed plans to launch a Chopping Block conference next year in California.

“The heartbeat will be to do multiple Chopping Block conferences in different cities,” he said. “That’s the long-term goal. And we want to take the money and invest that money into local churches in that city that we hold the conference at.”
