Many in Christian Hip Hop are just now hearing Papa San for the first time. Some attribute the awareness in Christian Hip Hop to Papa San's son, Tyshane Thompson of 808xEliTE. While the popularity of Tyshane's production and nearly the entire 'One Blood' sound being crafted by Tyshane are definitely factors, truth is San has been internationally known for 30 years. You may have also gotten an introduction to Papa San on Lecrae's 'Church Clothes 2' song "The Fever" which also features Andy Mineo. However, again Papa San is a veteran that has amassed Stellar Awards, World Music, Marlin Awards, and Dove Award nominations long before any of this took place. Papa San was known as one of the fiercest and fastest sound clash "DJ's" in Regge & Dancehall music in the mid-late '80s. He carved his name in Reggae & Dancehall music history as being a part of the first few STING events in Jamaica, which celebrated it's 30th year last year. Papa San signed a major record deal and had his music videos played on MTV (in the mid 90's) just before getting saved in the late 90's. After committing his life to Christ, Papa San became the first Reggae artist with Christian content to land on the Billboard Reggae charts. To date Papa San has 4 albums that have charted in Billboard's Top 10 Reggae album chart as well as two #1 singles on the Billboard Dance charts. You can also catch Papa San on Kirk Franklin's hit song "Awesome God" and toby Mac's "Whoopsie Daisy (Catchafire)".
I'm excited to see a resurgence of Reggae & Dancehall in Christian music, and expect to see 'One Blood' top the Billboard Reggae and iTunes Reggae charts when it releases Tuesday January 21st.
