Over the past 20+ years, I've often wondered why hip hop is so obsessed with low temperatures. Think about it...jewelry is referred to as ice, "cold" has consistently been used as an adjective in hip hop culture (i.e. "cold chillin'", "That's cold!" "Stone Cold Rhymin'"), and countless MCs have had names that alluded to refrigeration. Ice Cube, Ice T, Just Ice and of course, Vanilla Ice have all had names that alluded to cool, and maybe that's the point. After all, "cool" was used by jazz musicians in the 1940s to signify that something was hip, and hip hop took that concept to an extreme.

When we listened to Sho Baraka's album 'Lions & Liars', one of our favorite hooks on the album was on the song "Word", featuring ... well, nobody knew. We couldn't find the answer, and we even posed it as a trivia question to you. The only answer we got was from an inside source in the UK. So I tracked down this person, and gave compliments, but she shied away from them and played it off as a fluke. She isn't a known artist, but she is a songwriter and rapper. She runs a the label Preacha Boy Music (Jahaziel, Etizz, New Direction Crew, GP), among other things. We introduce to you, Charisse Beaumont.
If you have ever met St. Louis native and Lampmode Recording artist J'son, you would know that he is one very passionate guy. Whether its having hour long debates about doctrine or relaying instructions at his own video shoot, J'son throws every ounce of himself into what hes doing. Who is Json? Maybe youve heard him on one of Flames four albums. Maybe youve heard him on '13 letters' or any of the other Reach Records projects. His listeners have been fortunate benefactors of this creative zeal on his past albums 'The Seasoning' and 'Life on Life,' and now with his forthcoming third album he is ready to push the envelope even further. I recently sat down with J'son during a video shoot to talk about his new label and the upcoming album.
