Qualcomm Stadium, home to the San Diego Padres, served the city’s community in a major way with the Love Thy Neighbor Movement’s Peace Gathering on Saturday August 27.
One of the organizers of the event was Ruben Torres, a name familiar for the old school Christian hip-hop heads, and a name, perhaps unfamiliar for some of the new guys.
Torres was the Vice President for Rescue Records, the label that housed P.O.D., Tonex, and Sackcloth Fashion among others. The former executive was also a rapper named Faceman from the group Smooth Ruffness.
His relationship to Christian hip-hop doesn’t end there. Torres was also instrumental in the young careers of Ill Harmonics and KJ-52, ultimately leading those artists to sign with bigger record labels.
Now, Torres is working on the Love Thy Neighbor Movement which aims to make a difference in the San Diego community.
“This is a call to action to those that love their community and the people in it, designed to embrace solutions towards a better San Diego. Let’s set our differences aside for the day and LOVE THY NEIGHBOR,” their website reads. “We encourage community partnerships, churches, community leaders, and government organizations to get involved, support, and take part in a family friendly event that we know will positively impact the city of San Diego.”
The event also had the fire department present for job recruitments and the blood bank as well.
Special guests included rapper King Dav$d and Sonny Sandoval of P.O.D.
