In a world where many teens know every word of a Soulja Boy or Lil Wayne song but can't remember the Ten Commandments or recite the Lord's Prayer, pastors and youth ministers across the nation are in a battle to bring their youths to Christ.

"Young people aren't going to stop listening to hip-hop," said Samad Bilal founder of New Generations Christian Conference, which stopped by Paradise Cathedral in Roanoke on Saturday.

The all-day conference focuses on bringing the word of God to young people who are influenced by today's hip-hop culture.

Todd Smith, aka Te'Luvv, doesn't fit the rapper mold. The only gold he wears is a wedding ring. He doesn't curse, drink or claim to have emerged from thug life. "The bottom line for me is that it's ministry," he said. "I decrease myself so God can look bigger and better."

Te'Luvv (pronounced Tay-Love) is a 28-year-old Christian rapper who recently moved to Memphis, and just released his fourth CD, "The World is Not Enough." Each track is a poetic sermon delivered through a rap beat.

Left to Right: DJ Primo, Sho Baraka, Lecrae, Tedashii, Trip Lee. Photo by Sketch the Journalist

DJ Primo, who chopped and screwed the 116 Clique's first collective project, not too long ago returned to Houston from his second tour of duty with the U.S. Army and was able to present the crew with an American flag that flew overseas in Afghanistan. How dope is that?
Next time you see the King of Christian Chop-N-Screw be sure to tell him how much you appreciate his service and sacrifice in our armed forces.

On Friday night in Royal Brougham Pavilion, Portland-based rappers Jelani "G-Natural" Greenidge and Jaamar "J-MAC" McKelvey, rapping about breakfast cereal, received enthusiastic applause from 150 attendees.

As hip-hop crew "The Iccsters," they performed during the fifth annual Night of Beats, including the song "Cereal," which features rhymes about rap skills and a relationship with Christ using cereal metaphors:

"The love of God compels me to move / and kind of like Kix, he's kid-tested and mother-approved. / So strong, you don't need to spike it / and makes Life so good even Mikey likes it."

During their set, Greenidge said that some people still think that being a "Christian rapper" is a contradiction, almost like being a "Christian porn producer."

An article about Christian Hip Hop in the Washington Times.

Good luck trying to tell 30-year-old Emanuel Lambert Jr., known to his listeners as Da' T.R.U.T.H. , that hip-hop is dead — that record sales within the music genre are slumping and its reputation is sagging because of its perceived penchant for bling, breasts and blow.

Mr. Lambert still believes in the power of hip-hop culture and still believes in its ability to uplift. He has faith — quite literally.

For the past six years, Mr. Lambert — known to his listeners as Da' T.R.U.T.H. — has made a living writing, recording and performing rap songs that riff on God and the Scriptures, not gats and spinners. The Grammy-nominated emcee is one of a growing number of Christian artists who have chosen to express themselves through hip-hop music and dance.

The people pushing so-called "holy hip-hop" are diverse. They're white, black, older, younger, well-to-do and strapped for cash. Most, but not all, are born-again.

The Arizona Republic interviewed Sinbad and take a look at this Q&A:

Q: What would fans be surprised to find on your iPod?
A: I've got three of them, and it runs the gamut. There's always some funk, some jazz fusion, some jazz-funk, some rockers that can really throw down. There's a lot of hip-hop Christian rap on there, too. I don't know if that would surprise people. What would surprise people?

This summer, the 116 Clique (Lecrae, Trip Lee, Sho Baraka, and Tedashii) is traveling from city to city, not just to put on a concert, but to call believers to live UNASHAMED of the GOSPEL! Are you ready to live that way? Or will you allow the world to keep you from being souled out for Christ?

Check out the official tour dates!

We were there at The Peanut Butter & Jelly Party 2008 in Nashville TN during the GMA week. Watch this great video recap. Shout out to Syntax records doing big things!

AllHipHop.com has an article about Christian Hip Hop/Rap.

Holy Hip-Hop – it is not just for the deeply religious and positive thinking. Today, rappers from the mainstream are moving away from the secular and reconnecting with a Christian faith that was once just a hush-hush topic in Hip-Hop circles. With a Rap community that is filled with misogyny, drug and alcohol abuse, and endless violence, Hip-Hop's need for a balance has turned many listeners and artists back to their faith in order to reconcile a society's turmoil.
