With an eclecticism that blends old school lyricism, fresh deejaying, solid beats, jazz, funk and rock elements, and a delivery that rivals the best rap tactics, the Procussions ("the Pros") have jumped onto center stage and taken hip hop to another level. Immediate comparisons can be drawn to some early Tribe Called Quest, Leaders of the New School, or even Pete Rock and CL Smooth. The music just screams reminiscence and at the same time the listener is entranced by the intricate beat patterns that beg for a hand clap. With "..As Iron Sharpens Iron," the Pros extend the moniker of "conscious rappers" and break new spiritual ground. Christianity, for a large part, has been a silent religion when it comes to mainstream hip hop, with most Christian rappers either staying in the fold of "CCM" or rapping about other topics. By contrast, the Procussions tackle Christianity full force with lyrics that address how to live a walk that's aligned with the Christian belief system. If there's an overarching theme to "..As Iron Sharpens Iron" it could easily be that money doesn't buy happiness. "J.O.B. (Just Over Broke)" points out the problem of overemphasizing the importance of money. "Working for your money is backwards/ [it's like] working for a hammer in order to build a house/ it's a tool make it work while you're building it/ save and gain it interest/ learn to give up greed for priorities..." The theme is touched on throughout the album and is also the main focus of "Lights Off." From "The Beginning" to the "Water's Edge," "..As Iron Sharpens Iron" carries the listener through a journey of realization. The album is solid at every level of musicianship. The lyrics are thoughtful and focused. The delivery is captivating. The beats and production is top-notch. The music is complex and enjoyable. These elements combine to make "..As Iron Sharpens Iron" one of the best and perhaps most important releases of the year.
