Throwback Thursday: Sackcloth Fashion ‘Rising Sons’ ft. Man of War & E-Roc

Today’s Throwback Thursday takes us back to the musical stylings of Sackcloth Fashion in 1999 with the release of “Rising Sons” featuring Man of War and E-Roc.

According to the group’s producer, Tim “Rocdomz” Trudeau, “The video was the launch of Syntax Records…it put it on a national scale, fast.”

From there, the group and the newly formed Syntax Records really took off and became a foothold in the music industry.

The story behind the song is a bit crazy as Trudeau explained that they filmed nearly 24 hours for that day.

The music video was scheduled to shoot and they didn’t even have a beat to perform the song on yet. The artists then met up at a local studio and Trudeau created the beat there as the verses were written in about half an hour.

The video was shot by Fortress Entertainment, the creatives behind music videos for Papa Roach, P.O.D., Eminem, and more, so there was a lot on the line.

“There was no album in place when we recorded that song,” he shared. “The song and video came out and was played all over Christian television. It was unique because that wasn’t happening.”

“Rising Sons” showed that Christian artists, more specifically, Christian indies, could get a high-quality MTV like video.

It also made an unintentional stand for racial diversity. “A white guy, a Hispanic guy, and black guy rapping altogether on a track. That was a big deal then, to have it be so diverse…at the time music was very segregated.”

“To me, that video also symbolizes the passing of the torch from the first generation of Christian hip-hop to the next,” the Syntax co-founder said. “From then on, a lot of new people started coming out.”
